The trip away to the North Island has definitely seen my fitness dip with the rowing machine showing this with the numbers I am producing. Over the last 4 four days I have been out in the pushrim a couple times with modest pushes of 17km and 14km both just over an hour. Yesterdays push there was stiff NW breeze which made me turn around early on Mitcham Road, I did not want to push it too hard and too soon. Over the next couple of weeks I need to lengthen these training sessions to 90 minutes and beyond. I have also continued to use the rowing machine to improve my stamina. My chair now has a new rear vision mirror which will help me safely navigate intersections and the other traffic.
Part IV. NYC Marathon - To The Finish Line
 |
| Finish Line - Central Park |
After leaving the Bronx you return to Manhattan Island and you have just under 10km to the finish. And you are on your way to upper 5th Avenue through Harlem. This section of 5th Avenue runs along side Central Park with the other side of the road lined with buildings inhabited by some of the richest people in the USA. The streets here are lined with many people so lots of vocal support. In 2015 this is when my flat tyre was dead flat. I therefore limped up 5th Avenue, there is quite a climb on this section and you are fatigued. Eventually you head into Central Park where you go up and down some small hills, these short climbs are not easy. The race comes to a finish when you leave the park at the southern end, you traverse the southern end of the park to then go back in the park to the finish line, again up a small hill. The race is over! As a wheelchair athlete you are then carolled to the Achilles area in the park where you can meet up with your loved ones and get some post race care and nutrition.
