Achilles Christchurch Chapter in Hagley Park
Today I joined the Christchurch Chapter of Achilles NZ for their fortnightly training session at Hagley Park. I have mentioned Achilles a couple of times in previous posts without explaining who they are. Achilles International is a worldwide organisation dedicated to empowering people of all ages and abilities to participate in mainstream athletics. Their mission is to promote personal achievement, enhance self-esteem, and break down barriers. The signature event for Achilles International just happens to be the New York marathon. I was lucky enough that my local Achilles chapter applied for funding for myself to help me compete at the NYC marathon. The application was successful!!

Achilles Athlete and Guides Chch Marathon
The Christchurch Chapter of Achilles seems to have a good number of athletes and guides. Todays training must of had about thirty people, it also doubled as their AGM. The other athletes are mostly sight impaired or people with cognitive disorders. These athletes have guides to help them negotiate the pathways and other park users. These guides give their time freely to these athletes with disabilities so that they can participate in athletics and if desired compete in various events. There were a number of Achilles athletes competing in the Christchurch marathon. I was the only wheelchair athlete at todays training and with my higher speed I did not do my training with any other people. I completed two full circuits of North and South Hagley which totalled 12.8 km in about 50 minutes. Following training we had coffee and snacks at the Antigua Boat Shed. My breakfast ended up being a cheese scone, no date scones available unfortunately.

Coffee after training
The only other training completed since the last post has been a brief session on the rowing machine and 21.8km yesterday. With no building activity due to start for at least another week we have decided to stay in Ashburton.
