Stay Healthy & Keep Training - NYC Marathon Part II

It is a balancing act trying to increase the amount of training to get ready for a marathon and to stay health and avoid injuries. Currently I am training most days, either pushing in the racing chair or working out on the rowing erg. The option for rowing at Lake Hood is not available at the moment with the lake closed with another toxic algal bloom. My training push today was the first since my last blog post five days ago. During that time we have had rain, wind, blistering heat and cold so I stayed busy on the erg. Todays push went well with my technique feeling good and I keep up a steady pace for all 20kms. Average speed was 14.3km with total duration of the work out 1 hour 23 minutes with an average heart rate of 137 bpm. The smart watch provides endless statistics!! The photo below features my new haircut and an innovation to make me more visible with a bike tail light at the top of my chopper flag pole. I lost my chopper flag on my last push when it was very windy. If you find my little orange chopper flag please return it to 95 Walker Street.

Description of New York City Marathon Part II
Following the rapid descent down the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge you are greeted by haybales at the left hand bend at the bottom of the bridge. As explained prior to the race, if you see haybales they are there for the wheelchair athletes when they take the corner too quickly. The bridge takes you to Brooklyn and you head down 4th Avenue for about 7km. With the wheelchair athletes starting more than 30 minutes before the first of the runners people are only just starting to arrive to cheer the runners so things are relatively quiet. The some of the side streets are blocked with fire engines and there are water stations manned by enthusiastic volunteers. Brooklyn has significant Orthodox Jew community who also come out to support the marathoners, they do it in a more subdued fashion than some of the other New Yorkers.
